Roger Showley Is LAI International Journalist Of The Year.

Roger demonstrated those qualities as the former Real Estate Editor of the San Diego Union Tribune. He retired in March 2018 after a distinguished career of 44 years.
Most recently he covered the County’s growth and development, a beat that encompassed residential and commercial real estate, planning, design, historic preservation, downtown and suburban trends and San Diego history.
In his exceptional career, Roger received numerous journalistic awards from industry and press organizations and was a regular panelist on San Diego KPBS news shows.
“Roger Showley was the voice of real estate for more than 40 years at the San Diego Union Tribune. His knowledge of real estate and all the players in it remains unsurpassed” according to economist Alan Nevin, LAI San Diego member and LAI Fellow.
A third-generation San Diegan, Roger graduated in history from UC San Diego 1970, spent three years in Washington, D.C., and a year in Harrisburg, Pa., before returning to San Diego in 1974.
In addition to his journalistic work, he has written six books, journal articles on San Diego history, and taught courses on local history at University of California-San Diego Extension.
Roger serves as President of the Balboa Park Committee of 100, a group working to preserve Balboa Park’s historic architecture, gardens and public spaces since 1967.

Roger and his wife, Carol, live in Scripps Ranch. They have two grown children, Charles and Catherine. Since leaving the newspaper, Roger has joined boards and committees related to media literacy, architecture and planning.
