LAI Member Matt Hugel’s new roles
January 28, 2026

LAI Member Matt Hugel joined Maryland Institute College of Art as Director of Community Development and External Relations.
Under the leadership of President Cecilia McCormick, he will focus on strengthening partnerships and executing projects at the intersection of community, the built environment, and the creative economy. In practice, this means translating MICA’s academic and creative assets into tangible civic partnerships, public-realm investments, and workforce pathways that both anchor the institution in and help grow the broader creative economy.
And Matt also joined the board of Friends of Maryland’s Olmsted Parks & Landscapes.
Designers will know Frederick Law Olmsted for his pioneering plans for Central Park, Boston’s Emerald Necklace, and numerous park systems across the country. Baltimore has its own seminal plan: the 1904 Report Upon the Development of Public Grounds for Greater Baltimore, which shaped our modern park system and continues to inspire the development of today’s Baltimore Greenways Trail Network.
