What Is the Future of BART’s Transit-Oriented Development Program?
Highlights from Two Active Projects on Both Sides of the Bay
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Program has ambitious plans to greatly expand TOD in and around its stations with potential for over 20,000 units and 4.5 million square feet of commercial space over the next 10 years. BART’s current TOD portfolio includes 13 completed projects, four under construction projects, and seven approved projects in the pipeline. Two projects that highlight BART’s latest efforts include Strada Investment Group’s recently approved Lake Merritt TOD project consisting of over 550 homes, including 40% affordable and over 500,000 square feet of commercial space, and the Balboa Park Upper Yard project, a partnership between Related Companies, Mission Housing, and the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development consisting of 131 units of affordable housing on a two-acre site.
