Planting Resiliency: Exploring Below-ground Mitigation Techniques for Urban Trees
This project is the first comprehensive, long-term tree/infrastructure damage study that has been done in Hawaii, with intended results affecting urban environments. This project received funding from the Land Economics Foundation. It was conceived through group of urban forest advocates and Dr. Andy Kaufman, University of Hawaii, at Manoa. The project was initiated in 2015 with the selection, installation and establishment of 50 tropical trees (Rainbow Shower (Cassia x nealiae) and Kou (Cordia subcordata) species, along with simulated sidewalks, and the testing of three planting pit sizes, root barriers, root paths, and Silva cell installation protocols.
