New and Old Dimensions on Affordable Housing
Debates on affordable housing, in the US or elsewhere, often feature the role of the federal government to enable affordability, as they have the deepest pockets. But along with enabling affordability come rules and regulations on design, tenure, equity and accountability, and local government resistance. And, too often, delay or disappointment.
Howard Husock joins us on December 3rd, 2021 at 11 am CST for the first of what we intend to be a series of LAI global webinars on affordable housing from multiple perspectives. Howard will talk to us about his recent research on the checkered record of affordable housing supply in the US, the challenge of single family exclusionary zoning and a renewed call for ownership opportunities in provision of affordable housing, something he characterizes as ‘housing unreform’.
Mr. Husock is a LAI member with the New York chapter, and a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), where he focuses on municipal government, urban housing policy, civil society, and philanthropy.
Howard’s discussion will be followed by a brief response from Michael Klein, Phoenix LAI member and CEO of Freedom Financial Funds, LLC. Michael will share a west coast perspective from his volunteer experience building affordable ownership homes for lower-income veterans through Homes 4 Families (https://www.homes4families.org).
Richard Cook from our Vancouver chapter will add a Canadian lens. Canada is being called to respond to housing unaffordability across the nation, nowhere more than in Vancouver. Richard will moderate the discussion and share his experience with a 3,000 unit project in one of Canada’s First Nation communities, as well as regional initiatives.
We are delighted to have Howard Husock open an LAI dialogue on this important topic, building on his just released book, “The Poor Side of Town, and why we need it.” Please join us on December 3rd from 9 to 10 PST for what we expect to be a very lively discussion.
