The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Council has selected Hawaii as the host of the 2016 IUCN World Conservation Congress – the world's largest conservation event – being held in September 2016.
Held every four years, the Congress brings together leaders from government, the public sector, non-governmental organizations, business, UN agencies and indigenous and grass-roots organizations to discuss and decide on solutions to the world's most pressing environmental and development challenges. In its 60 years of existence, the conference has never met in the U.S.
Randall M. Tanaka, President of the 2016 World Conservation Congress Host Committee/Hawaii, spent 17 years with the Hawaii Convention Center before becoming a consultant on conservation issues. He also served as chief operating officer of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperative (APEC) Hawaii host committee in 2011.
