Color of Law II: Equitable Residential Appraisal–Recent Findings
Dr. Junia Howell, Ph.D., Visiting Assistant Professor, University of Illinois, Chicago (UIC) will present her ground-breaking analysis of a dataset of 47 million 2013-2022 residential appraisals from the US Uniform Appraisal Dataset (UAD). http://www.juniahowell.com/
Her report ‘Appraised’, produced with co-author Dr. Elizabeth Korver-Glenn of Washington University, reached the conclusion that neighborhood racial inequality in appraisal values has been growing significantly in the last decade, including through the pandemic: https://www.eruka.org/appraised
These findings have attracted national attention since the reported case of a Baltimore couple who achieved widely different appraisal values for their home: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/02/realestate/racial-bias-home-appraisals.html
This event will kick off a LAI Color of Law II webinar series prompted by the 2017 book by Richard Rothstein: https://wwnorton.com/books/the-color-of-law/ The 1st LAI webinar series on this topic can be viewed on the LAI website: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ6aJNopS_M
A next LAI Color of Law II webinar is scheduled for October 19, 2023, with a presentation from the Appraisal Foundation: https://www.appraisalfoundation.org/
