Color of Law II: Equitable Residential Appraisal–Recent Findings

Dr. Junia Howell, Ph.D., Visiting Assistant Professor, University of Illinois, Chicago (UIC) will present her ground-breaking analysis of a dataset of 47 million 2013-2022 residential appraisals from the US Uniform Appraisal Dataset (UAD). http://www.juniahowell.com/

Her report ‘Appraised’, produced with co-author Dr. Elizabeth Korver-Glenn of Washington University, reached the conclusion that neighborhood racial inequality in appraisal values has been growing significantly in the last decade, including through the pandemic: https://www.eruka.org/appraised

Junia Howell, Ph.D.

Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology

Dr. Howell received her BA from Wheaton College, and both her MA and Ph.D. (Sociology) from Rice University. Her work has been published in over a dozen academic journals, with a particular focus on the effect of neighborhood racial composition on housing values. Her aim is to use her empirical research and public advocacy to illuminate what we all can do to transform our world into a more just community. She recently founded a non-profit (eruka.org) to implement solutions to cultivate equity across people and places by reimagining housing and financial services. http://www.juniahowell.com/

Christine is a retired real estate market analyst who co-founded Goodman Williams Group and was a VP of Real Estate Research Corporation (RERC). For 10 years, she was International Historian on the Executive Committee of the LAI Bd. of Governors and was President of the Ely Chapter. She holds an MBA from Northwestern and BA in Urban Studies from Michigan State.
