Throughout the country, local governments are adopting legislation that allows Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in areas where they were previously prohibited. Advocates see ADUs as a way to expand access to a range of housing options, increase affordability, and add much-needed housing supply within existing neighborhoods. Join us on Thursday, June 18 at noon as our speakers discuss how local jurisdictions across the region are approaching ADU policies and share successful examples of ADU implementation throughout Maryland. Learn about the opportunities, challenges, and lessons emerging from these efforts to address housing needs in our communities. Under state legislation (HB 1466), Maryland actively encourages Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) development to combat housing shortages. The mandate requires counties and municipalities with zoning authority to update their laws to permit ADUs on single-family detached lots. Our speakers will share their experiences of how ADUs are being approached within the region and lessons learned when modify zoning codes to allow for their implementation.

Please feel free to review the ADU Task Force Final Report and the ADU bill FAQ prior to the event for additional context.
