Baltimore’s housing market has astonishing breadth. Well-known neighborhoods like Canton, Federal Hill, and Roland Park compete for affluent new homeowners with the most desirable communities in the metropolitan area. Recent successful efforts to address high levels of home vacancy in Greenmount West, Oliver, and Johnston Square have also drawn attention from LAI and others.

But what about the neighborhoods in the middle of this market spectrum? These are often high-homeownership, predominantly African American neighborhoods that represent a crucial core of Baltimore’s population and tax base. But they are also stressed by Baltimore’s net loss of working- and middle-income families. Since about 2000 two nonprofit organizations, Healthy Neighborhoods and Live Baltimore, have helped these places compete for new homeowners in the real estate market while also supporting community, home maintenance, and wealth-building for current residents. Come learn about the strategy, values, and financial tools behind the work these two organizations do to draw public and real estate market attention to these crucial neighborhoods for Baltimore.
