The Transbay District: A New Transit Oriented Development for Work, Play and Stay in San Francisco
The development of the Transbay District represents one of the most dramatic transformations in the evolution of the San Francisco cityscape. Anchored by a new multi-modal Transbay Terminal and the tallest building west of Chicago, the transit-oriented vision for Transbay is quickly becoming a reality thanks to a combination of award-winning neighborhood planning and critical public and private-sector investment. Cities around the nation are pushing for transit-oriented development (TOD) to reduce traffic congestion, cut greenhouse gas emissions and improve the quality of the urban experience by promoting public transit, bike- and pedestrian-friendly streets, and diverse land uses at higher densities. But they often face steep challenges in securing the public and private investment needed to plan and implement TODs. Come hear from the public and private-sector leaders who are shaping the future of the Transbay District about what it takes to create such a neighborhood.
