Michael Burayidi, PhD

Michael Burayidi is professor of urban planning at Ball State University. From 2009 to 2016 he was Irving Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Urban Planning, Ball State University, Indiana. Burayidi received his PhD. in urban and public affairs from the University of Louisville, KY in 1994 and a Master of Environmental Design (MEDes.) from the University of Calgary, Canada in 1990. His Bachelors’ degree in development planning is from the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana.
Burayidi’s intellectual interest and scholarship is in urban resilience, downtown redevelopment, and planning with multiple publics. He has authored/edited nine books in this area of scholarship including, The Routledge Handbook of Urban Resilience, Routledge, London (2020), Cities and the Politics of Difference, University of Toronto Press, Toronto (2015) City Resilience: Critical Concepts in Built Environment, Routledge, London (2015), and Resilient Downtowns: A New Approach to Revitalizing Small and Medium City Downtowns, Routledge, London (2013).
Burayidi is founder and president of Burayidi Consulting, LLC, a planning and land development consulting firm registered in Indiana. The firm specializes in downtown and urban/neighborhood redevelopment plans, housing and comprehensive plans, resilience and climate action plans, program assessment and evaluation, and public engagement. Seed funding from the Land Economics Foundation was used to investigate shopping mall closures and their revitalization. The focus of the research was the Midwestern states, a region that has seen significant disinvestment following the deindustrialization of the national economy and where cities have also been hardest hit by mall closings. Following the study, a model was developed for predicting the health of shopping malls, and effective strategies for shopping mall renewal were identified.

Rocky McMurtray is a Regional Vice President of Leasing for Simon Property Group (NYSE: SPG) and oversees the Leasing function in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and several shopping centers in Florida. The portfolio on which he works encompasses over 20 million square feet. In his nearly 12 years at Simon, he has been involved with over $1.0 billion in lease transactions.
Prior to Simon Property Group, Rocky worked inleasing Northern California for CenterCal Properties, Westfield, and Federal Realty, including being part of the development team that built Santana Row (www.santanarow.com) in Silicon Valley, a ground breaking project that included retail, hotel, office, and 1,200 residential units.
Rocky is an active member in the International Council of Shopping Centers and has spoken at various industry events.

Richard Cook, MCP, RPP, MLAI

Richard Cook, MCP, RPP, MLAI is a professional land use planning consultant based in Vancouver, Canada. He has developed small-scale suburban retail in western Canada. Since 2010 Richard has advised the Tsawwassen First Nation on land use planning of all types, including their successful opening of a 1.8 million square foot regional ‘Mills-style’ shopping centre and adjacent power centre, the first such investment by Ivanhoe Cambridge within a First Nation. The community of 2,000 also has approximately 1.5 million square feet of Industrial space opened, including an Amazon fulfillment centre, with more projects on the way. 500 housing units are under construction toward a 3,000 unit buildout. Richard is a past-president of the LAI Vancouver chapter.
