Letter from the President

Larry Lund
This summer I have been looking at articles on creativity and one of the themes that runs through these articles is that creativity comes through exposure of ideas outside our normal paths. One of the strengths of Lambda Alpha is that we are a group that is diverse both geographically and professionally. This is the organizations strength.

So this fall, I would like to encourage each chapter to think about ways that they can use Lambda Alpha International to be more creative in their local communities. To ask how we can better share talent and ideas that will begin to develop creative solutions to our local problems.

The other week, I received an e-mail from London Chapter member Howard Richman on a public housing or social housing question (as they call it in England). I was able to refer him to LAI member Peter Holsten who is on the cutting edge of developing mixed-income neighborhoods.

Think about ways we can engage our Land Economics Foundation to help fund important seminars, workshops, and symposiums that will help make our communities better. See how we can share the talent in our Chapters around the world to address local issues. We have made the online membership directory more useable by adding a search engine that allows you to find members with different talents. Our challenge is to continue to find ways that we can bring talented people together for creative thinking.

Also, join us during our Sacramento-Napa Weekend Experience. This is just another way to learn about others in our organization that might be able to help you. The City of Sacramento is undertaking some exciting long term planning efforts and using cutting edge technology. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about what they are doing and to think how their efforts can be applied to your particular local situations.

Next Spring, we will be in Boston (April 30-May 1). Again, another wonderful opportunity to get together and share ideas. And then we will be in Chicago in the fall of 2005 to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of our organization.

I look forward to seeing many of you at these Weekend Experiences, but also to hear from you by e-mail and phone to learn how we can make a stronger impact in our communities.

Editor's Column

If you haven’t looked at our web site lately, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Better yet, our Online Keynotes is greatly improved of late thanks to the talents of Josh Kent (our webmaster), Terry Stevenson and Michele Meng (our association rep's), Larry Lund and Jim Fawcett.

Our Online Keynotes looks so good that we think we are now worthy of having sponsorships. We’ve come up with a pretty good deal, if I do say so myself. For the paltry sum of $250, your company can have your corporate logo with a link to your firm in all 12 issues of Online Keynotes and in the two printed editions.

Or, for another $250 an issue, you can have your firm as the master sponsor of the issue and have a writ-up about your firm in the issue.

I am so enthusiastic about this splendid opportunity that my company, Market Pointe Realty Advisors, will be the first 12- issue sponsor of Online Keynotes.

I would welcome the opportunity to showcase your firm in Online Keynotes. Just give me a call or an e-mail.

LAI Website Redesigned

The LAI website has been redesigned by our webmaster Josh Kent, you can see the update at 209.224.198.102. We're constantly looking to improve the site and these changes are just part of our continuous efforts to make LAI better. We invite you to send your comments and suggestions to LAI@LAI.org.

Land Economic Foundation Donation Card Program

The purpose of the Land Economics Foundation is to give grants as recommended by the Land Economics Foundation Board, to further the educational efforts of Lambda Alpha International. In the past, the Foundation has helped fund graduate scholarships, fund publications, and conduct public discussions, forums, panels, lectures and similar programs.

Lambda Alpha Foundation is a non-political, tax-exempt non-profit charitable foundation under the U.S. Internal Revenue Code 501(c) (3) and can receive tax-deductible donations. Lambda Alpha International also has a Canadian Land Economics Foundation, registered as a federal charity, that accepts tax deductible donations from Canadian members.

Donations to the Foundation will be acknowledged in the monthly KeyNotes. Lambda Alpha International will send, when appropriate, a special acknowledgement card embossed with the LAI logo.

We encourage Chapters to consider making a donation to the Foundation acknowledging a speaker at a Chapter event. Chapters could announce that a donation has been made to the Foundation in the speaker's name. In addition, donations in the name of a deceased member are a very nice way to honor their memory. LAI will send cards to a surviving family member.

Members and Chapters can make donations to the Land Economics Foundation (or in the case of members from Canada, donations are payable to the Canadian Land Economics Foundation). Please send all checks to LAI’s headquarters and appropriate receipts will be issued. You are now able to make donations on the LAI website using a credit card. If you have any questions, please contact our Executive Director Terry Stevenson at 630-579-3284. or e-mail LAI@LAI.org.
