The Boston Lambda alpha Chapter under the leadership of its president John Fuller, as developed an outstanding program that focuses on the future of Boston.

“Who Should Attend?” Lambda Alpha Members and guests. Many participants in the Weekend Experiences are accompanied by their spouse or “significant other.” In addition to a learning experience, the Weekend Experiences are great social events, where you will renew and develop both business and social relationships.

What you will Learn:  Boston is addressing many of the same issues that you are in your business or community.  This program provides exposure to a variety of projects in Boston, where you will learn, through the “look and learn” method, how Boston is addressing these issues.  The Boston Chapter has also arranged to have the key people involved with the planning and development of Boston to lead the tours.  You will have the opportunity to talk with our "tour guides" to have your questions answered.

The Program: Our Weekend will begin Friday evening at 4 pm. when we walk from our hotel, the Omni Parker House to City Hall where we will meet Rebecca Barnes, the director of planning for the Boston Redevelopment Authority.  From City Hall, David Dixon, Director of Planning and Design at Goody Clancy Architects will lead us to the Boston Society of Architects through Quincy Market, Faneuil Hall, and part of the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

At the Boston Society of Architects, we will have a reception and the president of the society will talk about the different plans for the Rose Kennedy Greenway, which was created by the “Big Dig.”

From the Boston Society of Architects, we will walk to Durgin Park, which is at Faneuil Hall, for dinner.  Tom Miller, Director of Economic Development for the City of Boston will talk more about the City’s development efforts.  Afterwards, we will walk back to our hotel, which is only a few blocks away.

Saturday morning will begin with a mobile study tour that will leave the Omni Parker House Hotel at 8:30 am.  We will go to the new Boston Convention & Exhibition Center where Lowell Richards, III, Chief Development Officer of Massport will show us the plans for Boston’s waterfront redevelopment.

We will then take our bus to Kendall Square in Cambridge, where we will tour the Boston biotechnology company Genzyme's headquarters.  A German firm, Behnisch designed the building, which achieved the “platinum” LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) designation.  Our tour will be lead by Bob Husslien, General Counsel for Genzyme who was the key person in the building’s design representing Genzyme.

From Genzyme, we will walk to Frank Gehry’s new building -- the Stata Center at MIT.  The New York Times called it one of the three best buildings built in America in 2004.  Gehry designed the Stata Center facility to, “not only encourage interaction among a broad group of occupants in the center but, will also serve as a hub of student activity; a model for innovative, technologically-supported education; and as a modern incubator for new ideas and technology, providing significant flexibility for multiple uses.”

Lunch will be at a new exciting restaurant called Middlesex Bistro in Cambridge where a member of the Cambridge Planning Department will provide an overview of development in this area.

After lunch, we will tour the developments in the Cambridge area anticipating a return to the Omni Parker House Hotel around 3 pm.

At 5:15 pm, we will again board our bus at the Omni Parker House hotel and tour the Back Bay and end at Prudential Center for a reception in their marketing center hosted by Boston Properties.  The Prudential Center is located on a 23-acre in the heart of Boston's Back Bay, adjacent to the Hynes Convention Center, major hotels, shopping and residential areas, the Prudential Center is a 3.2 million square foot mixed-use urban center, comprised of 2.6 million square feet of office space and 620,000 square feet of retail space.

After the reception, we will walk one block to Copley Place where we will have dinner at Turner Fisheries.  At dinner, we will hear from Ely-Chicago member, Norman Elkin about the history of the Copley Place development and from Bryan Koop, a senior vice president with Boston Properties, regarding plans for Prudential Center.

We will not have our bus to return to the hotel, members and guests will need to find their own way back to their hotel.  The Omni Parker House hotel is about 1-1/2 miles from Copley Place and can be a pleasant walk or a short taxi ride.
